What is a charter school?
A charter school is an independent public school governed by a non-profit board of directors.
Where is the school located?
The school is located at 311 West 120th Street, New York, NY, 10027. The school neighborhood has a large ethnically diverse French-speaking population.
What grades are you serving? The school is currently serving Kindergarten, first and second grades. We will open a third grade class next year.
Does my child have to be able to speak French to attend the school?
No, your child does not have to be able to speak French to be admitted. As a New York City public school, it is open to all families, with the unique commitment of providing the highest quality English-French bilingual education inside a multicultural environment.
Will bus services be provided?
Yes, bus services will be provided for students who qualify for them.
Can my child attend the school if we do not live in the school district?
Children residing in the school district will receive first priority. However, if there is still space available, children from other school districts will be able to apply and final admission will be through a lottery.
What will be the percentage of English and French speaking children in the school?
The percentage of English and French speaking children in the school will depend on the number of applicants from each language background. However, exact percentages will not be known until the school opens and all applications have been finalized. There is no predetermined percentage of French and English speaking children.
Is the school free?
Yes, as a public school, the school is free.
Will there be free lunches?
Yes, there will be free lunches for all children who qualify according to the New York City Department of Education’s regulations.
Will the children take both American and French tests?
No, students will only be required to take American standardized tests.
What is the teaching staff look like?
The pedagogical staff will consist of highly qualified teachers who will teach in their native language. It will be comprised of teachers from English and French speaking countries.
Where do the teachers come from?
The teachers will represent the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of the English and French speaking world.
What percentage of your teachers are certified?
The majority of our teachers will be certified. Due to the inevitable attraction of our school to highly qualified teachers from outside New York State and/or the country, we anticipate that some of our teachers will not be certified. However, as is allowable under the law, this number will not exceed 30% of our teaching force.
If my child is accepted, will his/her younger sibling also be accepted?
The siblings of enrolled students will be given preference in admission.
